Mariage à Trinité sur Mer is the latest wedding addition to the blog this month. I was contracted by a lovely young couple who had been recommended to me the sister of a bride I shot two years ago in Vincennes at a large wedding.

I drove down to Brittany on a Friday through rain and fog and arrived at about 2pm in Trinité sur Mer. The sky was grey with a few drops of rain every now and then. I wasn’t contracted to shoot the civil wedding, but because I was there and had told the couple that if I made it on time, I’d pop in at 4pm and shoot the ceremony for them. Which I did. I was offered an invitation to some oysters and white wine, however I politely turned down the offer. I could imagine nothing worse than being bed-ridden the next day and unable to shoot the wedding. I had a steak and chips instead in the village of Auray by the harbour near where I was staying.

The next day the weather was worse! It was now raining big time! No worries, the hairdresser and make-up artist would be an inside shoot of course. I used an SB900 in a softbox on a stand and bounce flashed another off my D4 once inside.

At the grooms abode, it was still raining. We did manage however to get outside and shoot in front of the house, the groom pics as I thought the location was perfect. More groom shots were taken using an SB900 as they were getting ready which is always a laugh. Off to the Bride’s house to catch the last moments of preparation in her room with her Mother. These shots are always lovely. Leaving the house shots and we’re all off to the church.

The church at St Philibert was a chapel in fact. Very small inside. I had about 1m50 of moving space to work in. It was ISO 3200 darkness inside. Not too difficult. Bouncing flash was though. People were all around me so I had no clean surfaces to bounce off. I had to play particular attention to not showing any direct flash – which I hate.

Outside the chapel it was now sunny. Time to get a few group shots, no lighting setups as it was done on the fly. Freestyle shooting of guests before we all left for the château – which was a fantastic estate. Good light to work in. The Bridal shots were taken almost straight away behind the château in front of some tall green trees to give a dark background against the bride’s dress. An Elinchrom Ranger Quadra strobe was rigged up in a softbox and placed to the subject right. Using a 70-200mm on the D4 I positioned myself as far away as possible and shot them at 200mm maxed out. I triggered the Quadra with a pair of Pocketwizards.

Once the bridal couple shots were taken. I was now trying to seek out the best potential shots in the last of the glorius evening September light. The cocktail was well under way and all the guests were having a great time – a great moment for a wedding photographer with a 200mm lens! Towards the end of the evening many small informal groups started to form up for some funny group shots. A Best-Man had been assigned to this task, but I soon joined in on the shooting and let him get back to the party.

By 20h30 dusk was now on us. The Bridal party were heading off for the dinner and the rest of the evening. I said my goodbye’s and wished them all the best on their honeymoon and then headed back to my car for a 2h30 drive to Vendée to stay with the In-laws before heading back to Paris the following day.

All in all a great day, with fun people to work with. Many thanks to all, particularly to the the bride & groom ;)
